- what a fantastic first novel
so, of course, like most of you i heard of monica because i'm a big chuck fan (if you have to ask...) but when i heard she workshopped with him, and was often the funniest/darkest/deepest of the group, i said to myself "self, you've got to get that book." so i did, and i really enjoyed it - it is indeed funny, dark, sexy, and a pleasure to read from start to finish, only sorry it wasn't longer! so monica, i look forward to your next work, get back to your muse and stop cruising the internet - kidding - readers, you can check out a sample chapter here, but if you like chuck, or really, just enjoy off-beat stories go get the book (at hawthorne), and become a fan - since it isn't officially out, there are no reviews at amazon, but i will give it 5 stars, two thumbs up or 100 yellow rubber ducks - great work mon, and i wish you only the best - see you around the cult, here, and hope you make it to chicago for a reading soon - peace

- When Is This Book Coming Out?
I keep running into various blogs where this book is generating controversy, but when I go to Amazon, it's only available for pre-order. How are these people able to read it to even form an opinion?

- Never Mind
It looks like you can order it directly from the publisher, hawthorne books.
Does anyone know if Ms. Drake has any readings scheduled in the New York area?

- Excellent debut novel
Just wanted to drop a quick note to say how much I enjoyed CLOWN GIRL. Highly-polished, immensely readable, and out and out funny as hell. The fact that it's a first novel just makes the high-quality of the narrative stand out all the more. Really liked how so much of Nita's life is buffeted by sight gags, hysterical metaphors, and truly thought-provoking questions about the world at large and what clowns we have to be to get through it on a daily basis. Really looking forward to your next novel.

- Clown Girl Extraordinare -- Eyewitness dispatch from the book launch
PORTLAND – Author Monica Drake read to an overflowing standing-room-only crowd at Mississippi Pizza last night, one of the many signs of the enthusiastic reception for her debut novel Clown Girl.
Drake provided sound effects with her reading, (Stevie Wonder anybody), free clown noses, balloon figures, free beer and pizza. The audience included the likes of authors Tom Spanbauer, Charles D’Ambrosio and Katherine Dunn. Fans spilled into adjoining rooms as they vied to hear and see Drake’s funny, poignant performance. For those of you who have read this wonderful book, I refer you to the special section on juggling with fire. (Dolly Parton made proud.)
Just before Drake went on, Rhonda Hughes of Hawthorne Press announced Clown Girl made history by selling out its first printing before the official Jan. 31 launch date. A second print run begins next week.
(With apologies for the late posting -- meant to post this Feb. 1!)

- The book was amazing...
I had to pace myself and savor it, it's not often that you come across a book so funny and touching, I had to put it down so I could carry the thoughts with me in my day, all in all it made for a couple of happy weeks.
Monica came to Spokane to read at Auntie's she was awesome as she read the Juicy Caboosy(sp?) passage and there were many people disappointed that they didn't get their books signed before she left, I saw she was leaving, so fortunately I had my book and my plucky signed, she is my new new short term personal savior, I am eager to read more of her work, anything, I'm convinced her table scraps are emotionally moving and well written.

- Can't get it out of my head
Since I finished reading Clown Girl about two weeks ago, I can't stop thinking about it. I actually feel like I've watched the movie because the scenes in my head are so vivid. Monica, you've written such a beautiful and sad story; I feel like I know Nita. She tries so hard and yet nothing seems to work out. She just wants everyone to be happy, but she keeps digging herself a deeper hole and you want to yell, "Hey, Stop it already!" It may be because I'm watching Big Love, but in my dreams Ginnifer Goodwin is Nita. Her Big Love character Margene, she is also trying to please everyone all the time, her thoughts and opinions get washed over, and she cocks her head to one side really cute and I can see Nita doing so. I also just watched Purple Violets, and found Patrick Wilson. He has such blue eyes and beautiful bone structure. I can also see him smelling of cinnamon buns easily. Well, I really came here just to say Thank You! I truly enjoyed Clown Girl and can't wait for what is next.

- So I just saw a you tube video....
In it Chucky P plugged the book saying that it may be made into a movie where Sarah Silverman would play Nita.
I think that's perfect casting.
Perfect.
btw, I wonder how many clowns develop a latex allergy due to the prolonged exposure of the mucous membranes to natural rubber latex particles.

- Happy Birthday Yesterday!
I was thinking of you. Like, how come you look so young for such an advanced age? You're older than I am now...oh, yea! That's how it works.
